Guwahati, June 23: Assam is once again battling the fury of nature, recent heavy rainfall has caused a bridge in the Kumarikata area of Tamulpur to be washed away, adding to the already grim flood situation in the state. With loss of life and widespread damage, Assam is facing a challenging time.
The incessant rain has resulted in a dire flood situation in Assam, impacting multiple districts. According to official reports, nearly five lakh people across 12 districts have been affected by the floods. Barpeta is the worst-hit district, with over 3,25,600 people suffering, followed by Nalbari and Lakhimpur.
Tragically, one person lost their life on Thursday, marking the first official flood-related death this year. The floodwaters continue to pose a threat to the lives and livelihoods of the affected population.
The floods have submerged 1,366 villages and caused damage to approximately 14,091.90 hectares of crop areas across Assam. Massive erosions have been observed in several districts, including Barpeta, Sonitpur, and Dhubri. Landslides have also been reported in Dima Hasao and Karimganj due to heavy rainfall.

To combat the crisis, various agencies and authorities, including paramilitary forces, NDRF, SDRF, civil administrations, and local NGOs, have been actively involved in rescue operations. So far, 561 individuals have been rescued from different locations. Relief camps and distribution centers have been set up, providing shelter, food, and essential supplies to those affected.
The floodwaters have wreaked havoc on Assam’s infrastructure, damaging embankments, roads, bridges, and other vital structures. Districts such as Udalguri, Darrang, Bongaigaon, and Kamrup have been severely affected by the destruction caused by the floods.
As the flood situation in Assam remains critical, continuous monitoring and immediate assistance are crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected population. Efforts to repair damaged infrastructure and restore normalcy will be essential in the post-flood recovery phase.
