Manipur security

Imphal, May 05: The Manipur state government has appointed Kuldiep Singh, a retired IPS officer, and former CRPF chief, as its security advisor in response to the ongoing violence between the Meitei community and tribal groups.

Singh, who retired from service in September 2020, has already arrived in Imphal to take up the position.

Clashes began on Wednesday and have since escalated, with counter-attacks being mounted by different communities in response to earlier violence. The unrest stems from a “Tribal Solidarity March” held by Naga and Kuki tribals to protest against the proposed granting of scheduled tribe status to the Meitei community. This has led to the displacement of over 9,000 people from their villages.
