Guwahati, Oct 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply criticized the Congress party for its resolution on the Israel-Palestine conflict, drawing a controversial parallel with Pakistan’s stance on the matter.
In a strongly worded statement, Sarma questioned the Congress’s position and suggested that they should have condemned the terrorist attacks by Hamas before expressing their views on Palestine. He went on to assert that the Congress’s resolution resembled Pakistan’s stance on the issue, a direct swipe at the opposition party’s position.
Sarma’s critique didn’t stop at highlighting the Congress’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict; he also posed a thought-provoking question regarding the party’s intentions. He asked whether the Congress, with such statements, aspires to govern India or follow a path more aligned with Pakistan. This challenge questioned the compatibility of the Congress’s international stance with the party’s ambitions on the domestic political front.
This controversy has arisen in the aftermath of a resolution passed by the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest-decision-making body within the party, expressing “dismay and anguish” over the Israel-Palestine war. The resolution underlined the Congress’s support for the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to land, self-government, and the pursuit of dignity and respect.

In response to Sarma’s criticisms, Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah launched a counterattack, labeling the Chief Minister as a “liar.” Borah contested Sarma’s claims by pointing out that the Israeli government had not yet confirmed whether Hamas was responsible for the killing of children.
He emphasized that the initial statement by Jairam Ramesh, a prominent Congress leader, condemned the brutal attacks on the people of Israel. In this exchange of accusations, Borah also accused Sarma of following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that lying had become second nature to the Chief Minister.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has been a source of widespread concern and international attention. The violence has resulted in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction, with a series of attacks by Hamas from Gaza and retaliatory strikes by Israel. The conflict has sparked a humanitarian crisis, and the casualty figures continue to rise.
As of the sixth day of the conflict, the Israeli military reported over 1,300 casualties, including 222 soldiers, while authorities in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip have claimed that over 1,400 people have been killed in Israel’s offensive against the Palestinian group.
The exchange between Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Congress leadership exemplifies the complexities of navigating international issues within India’s political landscape.
The Israel-Palestine conflict, a deeply divisive and emotive matter on the global stage, has implications for domestic politics in India, as leaders grapple with the challenge of balancing international relations and public sentiment.
The differing perspectives within India’s political spectrum on matters of international concern, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, highlight the importance of nuanced and well-considered diplomacy in managing India’s relationships with various nations.
