Guwahati, Sept 01: In the ongoing eviction turmoil in the Silsako Beel area of Assam, women protestors have resorted to a shocking act of defiance. Faced with the looming threat of eviction, these women have taken to the streets, coming out half-naked to confront the district administration’s eviction drive.
Images and videos circulating on the internet depict the stark reality of their resistance. Women from the protesting community have torn their own clothes, using this symbolic act to vehemently oppose their forced eviction.
They have boldly declared that they would rather face dire consequences than be uprooted from their homes. Despite police attempts to disperse the crowd, the determined women stood their ground.
The protest at Silsako Beel escalated after the evicted residents vehemently opposed the district administration’s renewed eviction efforts. The situation turned heated on August 31, with clashes between locals and the police force assigned to carry out the eviction.
The district administration’s initial purpose in visiting Silsako Beel was to demarcate boundaries in the contested area. Reportedly, a substantial deployment of over a thousand police personnel arrived in the early hours of that fateful day to execute the eviction drive.
This recent incident followed the demands of the evicted residents who called on the state government to provide rehabilitation for the victims.

However, locals argue that the district administration once again undertook eviction actions on August 31, this time without any prior notice or effective measures to relocate those affected.
The protestors, primarily consisting of displaced families, raised slogans against the government’s decision to conduct another eviction drive without proper notice or comprehensive rehabilitation efforts.
“We have been fighting for the last five months as they broke down our homes. We will never let this happen again, and we will not allow this land to be given to capitalist interests. We will continue to fight for our rights,” declared one determined protestor.
The situation remains tense as residents in Silsako Beel stand their ground, willing to endure extreme measures to protect their homes and livelihoods.
