{"id":12243,"date":"2021-06-08T08:56:38","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T03:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nerising.in\/?p=12243"},"modified":"2021-06-08T08:56:38","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T03:26:38","slug":"high-vaccination-rates-can-help-reduce-risk-of-variants-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/test\/high-vaccination-rates-can-help-reduce-risk-of-variants-says-who\/","title":{"rendered":"High vaccination rates can help reduce risk of variants, says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Geneva, 8th June:\u00a0<\/strong>A top World Health Organisation official estimated that COVID-19 vaccination coverage of at least 80% is needed to significantly lower the risk that \u201cimported\u201d coronavirus cases like those linked to new variants could spawn a cluster or a wider outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Ryan, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">WHO<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s emergency chief, told a news conference that ultimately, <strong>\u201chigh levels of vaccination coverage are the way out of this pandemic.\u201d<\/strong> Many rich countries have been moving to vaccinate teenagers and children \u2014 who have a lower risk of more dangerous cases of COVID-19 than the elderly or people with comorbidities \u2014 even as those same countries face pressure to share vaccines with poorer ones that lack them.<\/p>\n<p>Britain, which has vastly reduced case counts thanks to an aggressive vaccination campaign, has seen a recent uptick in cases attributed largely to the so-called delta variant that originally appeared in India \u2014 a former British colony.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan acknowledged that data wasn&#8217;t fully clear about what percentage of vaccination coverage was necessary to fully have an impact on transmission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBut &#8230; it&#8217;s certainly north of 80% coverage to be in a position where you could be significantly affecting the risk of an imported case potentially generating secondary cases or causing a cluster or an outbreak,\u201d<\/strong> he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo it does require quite high levels of vaccination, particularly in the context of more transmissible variants, to be on the safe side,\u201d<\/strong> Ryan added.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO&#8217;s the technical lead on COVID-19, noted the delta variant is spreading in more than 60 countries, and is more transmissible than the alpha variant, which first emerged in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>She cited <strong>\u201cworrying trends of increased transmissibility, increased social mixing, relaxing of public health and social measures, and uneven and inequitable vaccine distribution around the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, meanwhile, called on leaders of the developed Group of Seven countries to help the U.N.-backed vaccination program against COVID-19 to boost access to doses in the developing world.<\/p>\n<p>With G-7 leaders set to meet in England later this week, Tedros said they could help meet his target that at least 10% of the populations in every country are vaccinated by the end of September \u2014 and 30% by year-end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cTo reach these targets, we need an additional 250 million doses by September, and we need hundreds of million doses just in June and July,\u201d<\/strong> he said, alluding to the summit involving Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Also Read: <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nerising.in\/u-s-report-concluded-covid-19-may-have-leaked-from-wuhan-lab-report\/\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>U.S. report concluded COVID-19 may have leaked from Wuhan lab: Report<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>\u201cThese seven nations have the power to meet these targets.
