{"id":14727,"date":"2021-10-21T18:43:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T13:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nerising.in\/?p=14727"},"modified":"2021-10-21T18:57:24","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T13:27:24","slug":"assam-supreme-court-panel-ask-govt-to-take-action-on-illegal-construction-in-kaziranga-animal-corridors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/test\/assam-supreme-court-panel-ask-govt-to-take-action-on-illegal-construction-in-kaziranga-animal-corridors\/","title":{"rendered":"Assam: SC panel ask govt to take action on illegal construction in Kaziranga animal corridors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Assam, Oct 21:<\/strong> Supreme Court constructed Central Empowered Committee (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/cecindia.nic.in\/\">CEC<\/a><\/span>) has asked the Assam government to take action on illegal construction in the identified wildlife corridors of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a letter to the State\u2019s Chief Secretary, CEC Member-Secretary Amarnatha Shetty said an action taken report should be submitted to the panel within four weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEC had taken note of an inspection report submitted by Hemen Hazarika, scientist and head of the Guwahati-based Integrated Regional Office of the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on September 10.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report on violation of the court\u2019s order on April 12, 2019, was based on the inspection conducted by Laetitia J. The court had also banned all types of mining on these corridors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, Syiemiong inspected the construction activities on eight of the nine corridors along with park Director P. Sivakumar. This followed a complaint by Assam-based green activist Rohit Choudhury, pointing to new construction in the animal corridors in contempt of the court order.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>It was found that there has been illegal construction all along<\/strong>\u201d the eight animal corridors during the inspection at the field level, the report said while noting that the court order had been violated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Apart from illegal construction, the greatest eyesore and also a threat to the animals of Kaziranga National Park is the presence of trucks, etc. In the recent past it has been observed that trucks, tankers, and other vehicles are stopping to park in roadsides\u2026 and creating unnecessary hindrance to wild animal movement from Kaziranga National Park to Karbi Anglong hillside<\/strong>,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Because of this, the number of hotels\/dhabas are increasing day by day and\u2026 it seems like the said dhabas especially are chopping firewood from the trees of Karbi-Anglong hillside illegally<\/strong>,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Also Read<\/span>:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/nerising.in\/nf-railway-to-run-vistadome-service-from-tinsukia-to-naharlagun-from-oct-23\/\">NF Railway to run Vistadome service from Tinsukia to Naharlagun from Oct 23<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inspection also revealed that vehicle operators were washing their vehicles in streams flowing into the national park, thereby polluting the water bodies with oil, grease and wastewater. Dumping of garbage on the animal corridors and noise pollution due to the movement of vehicles was also deteriorating the environment of the park, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It underlined the corridor obstruction from a temple built-in 2019 in the Haldibari corridor (Golaghat district) and many shops have come up around it, although \u201c<strong>a maximum of three shops<\/strong>\u201d are allowed in animal corridors after permission sought from the local authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the other new construction activities were a wedding hall and a resort in this corridor. The resort authorities had built a stronger wall after elephants knocked down a long boundary wall earlier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also took serious note of a new expansive house owned by the \u201c<strong>local minister<\/strong>\u201d in the Kanchanjuri animal corridor in Nagaon district.
