{"id":14765,"date":"2021-10-22T12:47:57","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T07:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nerising.in\/?p=14765"},"modified":"2021-10-22T13:17:46","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T07:47:46","slug":"boosting-security-on-china-border-an-engineering-marvel-takes-shape-in-arunachal-pradesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/test\/boosting-security-on-china-border-an-engineering-marvel-takes-shape-in-arunachal-pradesh\/","title":{"rendered":"Boosting security on China border: An engineering marvel takes shape in Arunachal Pradesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Arunachal, Oct 22:<\/strong> An engineering marvel underway at an altitude of over 13,000-feet in icy cold weather to bolster all-weather connectivity and swifter military deployments to the critical Tawang and Kameng regions of Arunachal Pradesh along the China border.<\/p>\n<p>The Border Roads Organisation (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bro.gov.in\/\">BRO<\/a><\/span>) is feverishly working to complete the over Rs 700 crore Sela Tunnel project, which consists of two tunnels and approach roads, before the deadline of August next year. Announced in the 2018-2019 budget, the longer of the two bi-lane tunnels is 1,555-metre, while the other is 980-metre. The longer tunnel has two tubes, the main one and an \u201c<strong>escape<\/strong>\u201d one for emergency use.<\/p>\n<p>The existing 317-km long Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road meanders its way through the Sela Pass at an altitude of 13,800-feet on way to Tawang.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the BCT road frequently gets blocked at the Sela Pass for both military and civilian traffic during three months in the winters due to heavy snowfall. \u201c<strong>It becomes a logistical nightmare and requires massive snow clearance work<\/strong>,\u201d said Col Mehra.<\/p>\n<p>Being constructed using the \u201c<strong>latest Austrian tunnelling method<\/strong>\u201d, the Sela Tunnel is much below the snow line, which will allow all-weather travel without the challenges of snow clearance.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel\u2019s overhead clearance is also high enough to allow all military vehicles to pass through it. This will ensure troops and heavy weaponry like artillery guns can be swiftly rushed to Tawang from the 4 Corps headquarters in the plains of Assam to meet any contingency. \u201c<strong>The tunnel will cut the travelling distance by only 6-km. But it will ensure all-weather connectivity and cut travelling time by an hour<\/strong>,\u201d said Col Mehra.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Also Read<\/span>:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/nerising.in\/pm-modi-addresses-the-nation-after-india-achieves-100-crore-vaccinations-milestone\/\">PM Modi addresses the nation after India achieves 100-crore vaccinations milestone<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Presiding over the \u201c<strong>breakthrough blast<\/strong>\u201d of the main tube of the tunnel to mark the end of its excavation through video-conferencing last week, defence minister Rajnath Singh said the Sela Tunnel \u201c<strong>will play a crucial role in bolstering national security and ensuring socio-economic development<\/strong>\u201d of the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Sela Tunnel\u2019s construction has progressed at a rapid clip, with the excavation work on the 980-meter second tunnel also having already crossed the 780-meter mark.<\/p>\n<p>Col Mehra\u2019s long stint at the Atal Tunnel, which is the world\u2019s longest highway tunnel at 10,000-feet, has helped a lot. \u201c<strong>There was very poor geology there.
