{"id":16952,"date":"2022-02-03T13:06:30","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T07:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/?p=16952"},"modified":"2022-02-03T13:06:30","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T07:36:30","slug":"assam-man-commits-suicide-after-struggling-to-prove-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/test\/assam-man-commits-suicide-after-struggling-to-prove-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Assam man commits Suicide after struggling to prove Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Assam, Feb 3:<\/strong> A 60-year-old man from Assam, who was fighting a case struggling to prove citizenship at a Foreigners Tribunal, despite his name appearing in the National Register for Citizens (NRC), has allegedly died by suicide in Morigaon district, officials said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter, the deceased had a small business at the Jagi road dry fish market in Morigaon district.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\">\n<p>The family of Manik Das of Borkhal village Assam claimed he ended his life because of &#8220;<strong>frustration and mental torture<\/strong>&#8221; he faced while attending the proceedings at the Tribunal to prove his Indian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Police said Das was missing since Sunday and his body was found hanging from a tree on a hillock near his house on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>The body has been sent for postmortem. Prima facie it&#8217;s a case of suicide but we can say it with certainty only after the postmortem<\/strong>,&#8221; an official said. According to official sources, Das was cremated on Wednesday after postmortem.<\/p>\n<p>The case against Das, which was registered at the Tribunal in 2004 left him frustrated and imposed mental trauma that led him to undertake such a drastic step, as informed by his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The case has been going on for many years. We don\u2019t know why the police sent a notice to him and filed the case. My father\u2019s name appeared in the NRC<\/strong>.\u201d \u2013 she further stated.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Also Read<\/span>:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/assam-team-in-border-village-to-verify-claims-of-encroachment-by-mizoram-residents\/\">Assam team in border village to verify claims of encroachment by Mizoram residents<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The daughter also claimed that Das had all valid legal identity documents such as PAN card, Aadhaar card and land records in his name.<\/p>\n<p>Morigaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) D R Bora, however, said family issues could have driven Das to take the extreme step.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>It is totally wrong to link the alleged suicide with the FT case.
