Aizawl, Dec 16:\u00a0<\/strong>During a meeting chaired by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Thursday, it was agreed to take stern measures towards the illegal trade activities and to make collective efforts to seize all smuggled areca nuts and drugs, it said.<\/p>\n

Several government officers and leaders of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA<\/a><\/span>) were present at the meeting, the statement, issued by the information and public relations department, said.<\/p>\n

The state police will be assisted by volunteers of the association and other NGOs in the war against smuggling.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, it was also decided to “form a task force, involving officials of the home department and representatives of NGOs, to ensure seamless efforts towards curbing the menace”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was decided to “set up duty posts and check gates as many as possible across the state and along the international borders”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The officers and members of the association agreed to coordinate with Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) to make certain collective efforts in the fight against smuggling.<\/p>\n

East Mizoram’s Champhai district has lately ended up a conduit of smuggling for diverse items, which includes dried areca nuts, drugs, and unique animals from Myanmar.<\/p>\n

Recently, six vehicles allegedly carrying smuggled Burmese areca nuts had been torched by a mob in western Mizoram’s Mamit district.<\/p>\n

Local growers have alleged that their markets had been stricken by smuggled Burmese areca nuts.<\/p>\n

Mizoram stocks a 510-km-long border with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
