Imphal, April 01:\u00a0<\/strong>Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that the state government is ready to conduct a house-to-house survey to identify illegal immigrants in the state.<\/p>\n

While speaking at a press conference in Imphal, he said that the Manipur State Population Commission (MSPC) has already been constituted and will be used to identify immigrants in the state. Singh added that the NRC cannot be introduced by the state government alone and that the Centre’s approval is required for this.<\/p>\n

The demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has been growing in the state, with various civil society organizations and student bodies demanding action against unchecked migration.<\/p>\n

On March 29, thousands of women from three all-women-run markets called Ima Keithels, along with members of six student bodies, carried out a rally from Khwairamband Keithel towards the chief minister’s secretariat demanding the implementation of NRC in Manipur.<\/p>\n

The six student bodies – AMSU<\/a><\/span>, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, and AIM – held a demonstration in Imphal’s Khwairamband Keithel, the business hub in the heart of the capital city. The rally began from Khwairamband Keithel and was carried out towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow along Bir Tikendrajit Road by carrying banners with slogans demanding the implementation of NRC in the state.<\/p>\n

The Manipur CM’s announcement of a house-to-house survey is a step toward identifying illegal immigrants in the state. While the NRC has been implemented in Assam, it has not been implemented in Manipur yet.<\/p>\n

The house-to-house survey is expected to provide more accurate data about the number of illegal immigrants in the state. The MSPC, which has been constituted for this purpose, will play a key role in identifying such immigrants.<\/p>\n

The demand for NRC implementation in Manipur is a result of the growing population of illegal immigrants in the state. The unchecked migration has been causing various social, economic, and political problems in the state.
