Weather Update, June 23: <\/strong>Assam known for its annual monsoonal floods, continues to grapple with heavy rains that have already affected nearly 5 lakh people across 20 districts. Unfortunately, the situation is set to worsen as weather models predict more intense downpours today, exacerbating the ongoing crisis.<\/p>\n

The late arrival of the southwest monsoon has unleashed relentless rainfall, particularly in Assam and Meghalaya. The India Meteorological Department (IMD<\/a><\/span>) forecasts light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms in the region over the next five days. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday.<\/p>\n

A yellow watch has been issued by the IMD for several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that nearly half a million people have been affected by floods, with one casualty recorded so far.<\/p>\n

Multiple districts, including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, and Golaghat, are facing flash floods, while major rivers like the Brahmaputra, Manas, and Puthimari are flowing above the danger level. Agricultural lands have been submerged, and vital infrastructure, such as bridges and schools, has suffered damage.<\/p>\n

To support the affected population, the government has established 162 relief camps and is providing food, medicine, and other essential supplies. Despite the challenges, the people of Assam are resilient, and relief efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the floods.<\/p>\n

In terms of rainfall data for June, Assam and Meghalaya have received above-average rainfall, with a surplus of 30%. Arunachal witnessed normal rainfall, slightly below the average by 16%, while N.M.M.T experienced a deficit of 25%.<\/p>\n

As the monsoon season continues, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
