Guwahati, Oct 03: <\/strong>The United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), also known as ULFA-I, a banned militant outfit, has awarded capital punishment to two of its senior members for their alleged involvement in anti-outfit activities. This incident marks a notable event in the ongoing conflict in the northeastern region of India.<\/p>\n

One of the individuals sentenced to death is Lachit Hazarika, who also went by the alias Brigadier Salim Asom. He was a prominent figure within the ranks of ULFA-I and held a high-ranking position within the organization. Hazarika’s execution took place in Myanmar’s Sagain area, specifically in Hachi camp, on September 20. His close association with ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah and his involvement with the outfit dating back to the 1990s underscore the significance of his sentencing.<\/h6>\n

The other individual facing capital punishment is Bornali, a young boxer hailing from Tinsukia. Bornali, a relatively new member of the banned militant group, ULFA-I, joined the organization in the year 2021. Despite his relatively short tenure with the outfit, his sentencing highlights the strict disciplinary measures imposed by ULFA-I for alleged anti-outfit activities.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the developments leading to the capital punishment of these two senior ULFA-I members came to light following a significant operation carried out by the Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles<\/a><\/span> in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh police. This operation took place on the afternoon of October 1, 2023, in the Tirap district.<\/p>\n

During the operation, two active cadres of ULFA (I) belonging to the Self Styled Private Nilutpal Asom, also known as Monjit Gogoi, and Self Styled Private Upen Asom, also known as Ruhini Gogoi group, were apprehended. These individuals were found to be in possession of arms and ammunition.<\/p>\n

As the investigation into the apprehended ULFA-I cadres unfolded, both Nilutpal Asom and Upen Asom provided crucial information regarding the execution of the two senior ULFA-I leaders, including Lachit Hazarika.
