{"id":7769,"date":"2021-01-20T09:17:05","date_gmt":"2021-01-20T03:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nerising.in\/?p=7769"},"modified":"2021-01-20T09:17:05","modified_gmt":"2021-01-20T03:47:05","slug":"cong-announces-grand-alliance-in-assam-ahead-of-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northeastrising.in\/test\/cong-announces-grand-alliance-in-assam-ahead-of-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Cong announces \u2018grand alliance\u2019 in Assam ahead of polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Assam, Jan 20: <\/strong>The Congress and five other parties officially announced their \u2018grand alliance\u2019 for the Assam Assembly elections which is likely to be held in March \u2013 April, bringing an end to speculation on whether the\u00a0party will finally go with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/nerising.in\/assam-bjp-starts-jan-sampark-abhiyan-for-2021-assembly-polls\/\">AIUDF<\/a><\/span><\/span>. The alliance, however, did not name a chief ministerial candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the alliance \u2014 CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), AIUDF, and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) are the five partners with Congress \u2014 at a press conference in Guwahati, Assam Congress president Ripun Bora said, <strong>\u201cWe, the Congress decided to invite all like-minded parties to oust the communal forces for the best interest of the country.\u201d<\/strong> Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and senior party leader Bhupesh Baghel were also present at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Bora said leaders of all five parties held discussions with Baghel and party general secretaries Mukul Wasnik and Jitendra Singh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe have concluded that in the coming Assam Assembly elections, we all will fight together to oust the BJP. At the same time, we will keep our doors open to invite the other regional parties of Assam and other anti-BJP parties to join our alliance,\u201d<\/strong> Bora said.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance members are, however, silent on who will the probable chief ministerial candidate for the alliance. On a question on the issue, Wasnik replied, <strong>\u201cLet\u2019s not have all questions answered on one single day.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe, six parties, appeal to other parties that if you want to save Assam, you want to help the youth of Assam realize their dreams and aspirations, you want Assam\u2019s development, then we should come together and fight the elections,\u201d<\/strong> said Congress general secretary Singh.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, two important regional parties \u2014 Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal \u2014 which were formed after the massive anti-CAA movement that had swept the state in 2019-20 are in talks for an alliance, according to leaders from the two outfits.<\/p>\n<p>AJP has the backing of influential student bodies \u2014 All Assam Students\u2019 Union (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_Assam_Students%27_Union\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600; text-decoration: underline;\">AASU<\/span><\/span><\/a>) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) while Raijor Dal is the political platform of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by jailed activist Akhil Gogoi.<\/p>\n<p>When Bora was asked about the effect of this alliance on Congress\u2019s grand alliance, he replied,<strong> \u201cThat alliance will not affect our prospects.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The alliance announcement comes at a time when the Congress in Assam is undergoing a series of setbacks. In December last year, two sitting MLAs of the party officially joined the BJP.
