Tripura, March 23:<\/strong> Three years after the Biplab Deb-led BJP-IPFT the government took charge of Tripura, the state government has now announced it would form an expert panel to examine the viability of legalizing ganja cultivation.<\/p>\n

Ruling BJP<\/a><\/span> MLA Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl Monday moved the question in the state legislative assembly, during the ongoing budget session of the House, on prospects of legalizing cannabis cultivation in the state and said land of Tripura is \u2018very fertile<\/strong>\u2019 for ganja cultivation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a limited scope of revenue collection in Tripura. We have to depend on the central government due to this. The soil of Tripura is very fertile for cannabis cultivation but since it is not legal, many people are suffering financially here. If ganja becomes legal, it can be regulated, revenue can be collected and many people involved in cultivating it, illegally till now, can benefit financially<\/strong>\u201d, the BJP legislator said.<\/p>\n

MLA Hrangkhawl said though ganja is known to have medicinal properties, it doesn\u2019t provide sufficient benefit to the growers due to its illegal tag. However, that has not stopped ganja cultivation as it is constantly being grown and sold illegally, the MLA informed the house.<\/p>\n

In response to his question, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is also in charge of the Home portfolio, said his government chalked out a plan to rescue rural farmers from exploitation at the hands of people investing and the middlemen since lion\u2019s share of the proceeds of ganja trade went in their pockets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working to bridge the market linkages between farmers who are now producing dragon fruits, agar, pineapple, etc instead of ganja so that they can get their dignity and value. We have tried to stop the exploitation of the rural labour force at the hands of drug lords<\/strong>\u201d, Deb said.<\/p>\n

However, he assured that an expert panel would be formed to examine the viability of legalizing ganja in Tripura.<\/p>\n

Earlier in March 2020, Prasenjit Chakraborty, former state BJP spokesperson and founder of Janajagaran Mancha, a social service organization, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the country can benefit from a proper and scientific application of cannabis, or \u2018ganja<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

Chakraborty requested the PM to form a high-power commission to research the subject and tell the government about the benefits of cannabis as a medicinal plant and as a raw material in industrial applications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
