Gangtok, June 13: One person died and five others are missing after heavy rainfall triggered massive landslides in Sikkim’s Mangan district, officials reported on Thursday.

The landslides blocked roads, flooded houses, and damaged electricity poles across the region.

In Mangan’s Pakshep area, one body was recovered, while three individuals were reported missing from Ambithang near Rangrang and two from Pakshep.

Damage to three houses occurred in Geythang, with additional houses and roads affected in Nampathang near Pentok.

Due to a landslide, the Bringbong police outpost was relocated, and the foundation of a bridge at Sankalan sustained damage.

Mobile network services were disrupted in North Sikkim, prompting the district administration to request assistance from an SDRF team equipped with rations for Mangan.

District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri convened an emergency meeting with department heads to coordinate relief efforts.

An earthmover was dispatched near Mangshila Degree College to clear debris from the roads.

Despite being in Arunachal Pradesh for BJP leader Pema Khandu’s swearing-in ceremony, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang communicated with district officials and police to ensure prompt response to the crisis.

Tamang assured comprehensive support, including recovery aid, temporary shelters, and essential supplies, for the affected families.

He plans to return to Sikkim soon to oversee rescue and relief operations firsthand.
