Imphal, June 27: As the unrest continues in Manipur, the Indian Army has made an appeal for support in restoring peace in the state. The Army has expressed concerns over women activists blocking routes and interfering in security operations, terming it as unwarranted interference that hampers the timely response of security forces.

These actions have raised challenges for the forces in carrying out their operations effectively.

In a video shared on Twitter, the Indian Army’s Spears Corps highlighted incidents where women activists were deliberately blocking routes and interfering in security operations. This interference has been deemed detrimental to the timely response of security forces during critical situations. The Army appeals to all sections of the population to support their endeavors in restoring peace and urges them to refrain from obstructing security operations.

Recently, a stand-off occurred in Itham village in Imphal East, where a mob led by women confronted the Army. The operational commander made a mature decision considering the sensitivity of using force against a large irate mob. Ultimately, the forces had to let go of 12 militants who were holed up in the village. The security personnel managed to seize arms and ammunition before leaving the area.

The ongoing unrest in Manipur has its roots in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The clashes initially erupted on May 3 during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ held in protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. These clashes have resulted in more than 100 deaths so far.

Manipur’s population consists of Meiteis, who make up approximately 53% and reside in the Imphal Valley, and tribals—Nagas and Kukis—who constitute around 40% and live in the hill districts. The ethnic divisions and differing demands have fueled tensions within the state.

The Indian Army’s appeal for support in restoring peace in Manipur emphasizes the need to avoid unwarranted interference in security operations. As efforts continue to address the unrest, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together toward finding a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of all communities in Manipur.
