Guwahati, Jan 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a direct swipe at the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi, questioning their preferences in a recent post on the microblogging site X.

Sarma specifically pointed to the Gandhi family’s visits to the Babar Tomb in Afghanistan, notably highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s visit in 2005, and raised questions about their alleged disregard for Ram Lalla, asking why there seems to be animosity towards the deity and Hindus in general.

Earlier on the same day, Sarma responded to Congress leaders’ decision to decline an invitation to the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple.

He firmly stated that the Congress party was not deserving of the invitation due to its historical opposition to the construction of the Ram Mandir.

Sarma expressed dissatisfaction with the senior leaders of the Congress for refusing to attend the event, stating that they could have symbolically extended an apology to the Hindu Samaj by accepting the invitation.

Drawing parallels with Pt Nehru’s stance on the Somnath Temple, Sarma criticized the Congress party’s leadership, predicting that history would judge them as being anti-Hindu. The Chief Minister’s remarks highlighted the deep-rooted religious and political tensions surrounding the Ram Temple issue.

This controversy arose in response to Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party President Mallikarjun Kharge publicly declaring their decision not to attend the consecration ceremony scheduled for January 22.

The party justified their stance, characterizing the event as primarily an affair associated with the RSS/BJP.

In an official statement issued by Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh, the party acknowledged the religious sentiments of millions who worship Lord Ram but also pointed out perceived political undertones in the timing of the event, showcasing a nuanced approach to the situation.

The unfolding developments reflect the complex interplay between religious sentiments and political strategies in the Indian political landscape.
