Guwahati, Feb 10: As the political landscape in Assam gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Assam Congress has taken a strategic move by drafting a tentative list of candidates for all 14 parliamentary constituencies.

A screening committee meeting was convened at a party office in Delhi to deliberate on the fate of current Congress MPs and potential aspirants.

Sources suggest that this meeting served as a bargaining ground for seats, determining who stays and who gets replaced.

Key figures within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, including working presidents Rana Goswami, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, have been consulted before finalizing the candidate list, despite not being part of the screening team.

The screening committee comprises APCC president Bhupen Borah, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, AICC In-Charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, and two AICC secretaries.

However, only two constituencies have been confirmed thus far: Abhijit Hazarika and Bornali Phukon for Tezpur, and a dilemma persists for Guwahati.

The possibility of an alliance with AAP complicates matters, potentially leading to Mira Borthakur Goswami representing Guwahati. Meanwhile, AAP has already announced candidates for three seats in Assam.

Should Congress adhere to the INDIA bloc agreement, AAP might secure the Guwahati seat, while Dibrugarh could go to AJP leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Rakibul Hussain and Abdul Khaleque vie for the Dhubri constituency, with rumors of sidelining Khaleque.

Naiwritaa Joy Shukla is proposed for Silchar, with Gaurav Gogoi in contention for Jorhat. The fate of seating Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Gaurav Gogoi remains undecided for Nagaon.

Roselina Tirkey is suggested for Kariranga, while North Lakhimpur’s candidate is pending. For Karimganj, four names are considered: Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, Ahad Talukdar, Zubair Anam, and Aminur Rashid Choudhury.

This meticulous list underscores the party’s determination to field a formidable team across the state, aiming to unify votes and counter any potential opposition advantage.

While a survey will precede the final decision, the Assam Congress demonstrates readiness to confront the electoral challenge.
