Guwahati, Feb 17: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has taken significant action following Dadu Taye’s meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Taye, the Golaghat District Congress Committee (DCC) president, was expelled from his position after a viral photo showed him felicitating Sarma with a gamosa in Golaghat on February 15.

Expressing shock at his expulsion, Taye claimed a long association with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, stating he had served Gogoi for over 15 years and went to meet the Chief Minister for personal reasons.

The controversy escalated when Taye’s meeting with Sarma without informing the party’s higher authorities drew criticism from the APCC. A show-cause notice was issued to Taye, demanding an explanation within 72 hours for his actions, which were deemed detrimental to the party’s image, especially amid rumors of Congress leaders defecting to the BJP.

The notice highlighted concerns over Taye’s actions amidst alleged attacks on APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, purportedly under the Chief Minister’s orders. Taye’s meeting, described as happening “in the dead of night,” was seen as inappropriate given the political climate.

As a result, Golap Saikia was appointed as the in-charge president of the Golaghat DCC, effectively replacing Taye. In response, Taye accused Gaurav Gogoi of orchestrating his suspension, expressing resentment towards Gogoi’s alleged political maneuvers.

Taye’s criticism of Gogoi extended to questioning Gogoi’s allegiance to the party, suggesting that Gogoi’s actions were not in line with the legacy of senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi. Additionally, Taye criticized the party’s decision to field former MLA Roselina Tirkey in the Kaziranga seat, despite her rumored interactions with BJP leaders in 2020.

This expulsion and the subsequent controversy highlight the challenges faced by the APCC in maintaining party discipline and unity amidst shifting political dynamics in Assam. It underscores the need for effective leadership and strategic decision-making to navigate the complex political landscape of the state.
