Assam Flood districts

Guwahati, June 22: The flood situation in Assam has taken a turn for the worse, with nearly 1.20 lakh people in 20 districts grappling with the devastating impact of the deluge. Recent heavy rains in Assam, as well as in neighboring states and Bhutan, have caused the water levels of several rivers to rise above the danger mark, leading to the inundation of new areas.

Key areas affected by the rising waters include the Beki River, with its levels surpassing the danger mark at Road Bridge, Pagladiya at Nt Road Crossing, and Puthimari River at Nh Road Crossing. A total of 780 villages across 45 revenue villages in districts such as Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri have been severely impacted by the floods. Additionally, urban areas in Bajali, Darrang, Kamrup (Metro), Kokrajhar, and Nalbari districts have also been affected.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that Nalbari district alone has seen 44,707 people affected, followed by Baksa with 26,571, Lakhimpur with 25,096, Tamulpur with 15,610, and Barpeta with 3,840 individuals affected.

To provide relief to those affected, the district administration has established 14 relief camps and 17 relief distribution centers. Currently, 2,091 individuals have sought shelter in these camps located in Baksa, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Tamulpur districts.

The devastating floods have also impacted the lives of over 1.07 lakh domestic animals and poultry in the affected districts.

In response to the crisis, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire & Emergency Services are actively involved in rescue operations. On Wednesday alone, these teams successfully evacuated 1,280 individuals from flood-affected areas.

Unfortunately, the floodwaters have caused significant damage, including the destruction of four embankments, 72 roads, and seven bridges. The authorities are working tirelessly to address these infrastructure challenges and provide support to the affected communities.

The situation remains critical, and continuous efforts are being made to minimize the impact of the floods and ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
