New Delhi, Jan 18: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the poll schedule for the Legislative Assembly poll in three North Eastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya on Wednesday.

Earlier the poll panel said that it would visit the three states to review preparedness ahead of the elections.

The three states would be the first to undergo polls this year likely in February-March. The terms of their respective Legislative Assemblies are ending on different dates in March.

  • Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that there will be some polling stations managed completely by PwDs and women staff. Women will be in command in 376 polling stations across Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura, he said.
  • “Taking forward our initiative from Gujarat and HP Assembly elections held recently, in Meghalaya 60 polling stations will be managed by the youngest available staff, to inspire Young voters to participate in the festival of democracy,” CEC Rajiv Kumar said.

  • There are more than 62.8 lakh electors combined in Nagaland, Meghalaya & Tripura including – 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80+ voters, and 31,700 PwD voters. Over 1.76 lakh first-time voters to participate in the elections in 3 states: CEC Rajiv Kumar

  • For the upcoming assembly elections in 3 states, 9125 polling stations will be set up across 180 ACs. Over 80 % PS in rural areas. Webcasting facility available in ~ 70% of polling stations. State-wise details are in the slide attached.

  • The Elector gender ratio in Nagaland & Meghalaya is > 1000 & in Tripura, it is 989 which is more than the national average of 969. States have also witnessed higher women voter turnout % than males in the 2018 Assembly Elections.
  • CEC: We have asked the youth who is due to turn 18 years before the polling date so that we can add them with a welcome kit. As many as 10,000 youths have applied from these 3 states.
  • 2.28 lakh voters have been added in the three (Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya) states, 97,000 voters are more than 80 years in age, 2,600 voters are more than 100 years in age

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Elections

In Meghalaya, Congress emerged as the largest party in the 2018 assembly election with 21 seats but BJP teamed up with the National People’s Party to form the government, with Conrad Sangma as the Chief Minister.

In the 2018 Meghalaya assembly elections, the Congress won 21 seats, the National People’s Party won 19 seats, United Democratic Party won 6 seats, the People’s Democratic Front won 4 seats, Independents got 3 seats, BJP and Hill State People’s Democratic Party won 2 seats each, and one seat each went to Nationalist Congress Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement.

Nagaland Legislative Assembly Elections  

Nagaland is likely to see demand for a separate state ‘Frontier Nagaland’ by tribal groups as a central issue in the polls where Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)-BJP alliance is in power. In 2018, NPF emerged as the single largest party but the NDPP-BJP alliance formed a government with support from other parties.

In the 2018 Nagaland legislative assembly elections, Naga Peoples Front won 26 seats, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party won 18 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party won 12 seats, the National People’s Party won 2 seats, JD-U won 1 seat and 1 seat went to the Independent.
