Assam polygamy

Guwahati, May 12: The Assam state government has constituted an expert committee to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to end the practice of polygamy. The committee has been given a deadline of 60 days to submit its report. The announcement to form the committee was made earlier by the government, and it has now been constituted with the following members:

  1. Justice (Retired) Rumi Phookan as Chairperson
  2. Debajit Saikia, Advocate General, Assam – Member
  3. Nalin Kohli, Additional Advocate General, Assam – Member
  4. Nekibur Zaman, Advocate

Polygamy is a practice where a person is allowed to have more than one spouse, and it is prevalent in many parts of the country. The practice has been a subject of debate for a long time, with many calling for an end to it. The state government of Assam has taken a step in this direction by forming the expert committee.

The committee will examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy. The committee members are all legal experts who are well-versed in the Indian legal system.

Justice (Retired) Rumi Phookan will chair the committee, while Debajit Saikia, Advocate General, and Nalin Kohli, Additional Advocate General, both from Assam, will serve as members. Nekibur Zaman, an advocate, has also been included in the committee.
