Guwahati, July 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on July 18 that the Assam Cabinet has decided to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act of 1935.

This decision, part of the Assam Repealing Bill 2024, aims to combat child marriages and ensure uniformity in marriage and divorce registration across communities in the state.

The decision, made during the Assam Cabinet meeting, highlights the government’s commitment to addressing social issues such as child marriage.

Repealing the outdated 1935 Act is a step towards creating a more equitable framework for marriage registrations, aligning with contemporary norms and providing legal protection for all citizens.
