Guwahati, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded Self-Help Group (SHG) members for their crucial role in combating child marriage.
In a post on X, Sarma celebrated the efforts of 40 lakh SHG members, describing them as “true ambassadors of women empowerment.”
“Our Nari Shakti is leading our social welfare initiatives,” Sarma said. “The 40 lakh SHG members are spearheading the fight against child marriage through grassroots campaigns and innovative methods.”

Supported by the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission, the 4 million rural women have launched a new social security initiative against child marriage.
They are actively raising awareness through street plays and campaigns organized by the Women Protection Cell and Gender Research Centre.

Key actions include re-enrolling dropouts in school, offering skill enhancement, and promoting the ‘Ejupi Gos’ initiative, which celebrates the birth of girl children with sapling gifts.
SHG members also educate families about beneficial schemes like ‘Sukanya Samriddhi.
