Srinagar, Jan 10: As the winter chill continues to grip the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar experienced another freezing night with the mercury plummeting to minus 5.0°C on Wednesday.

The meteorological department reported that this temperature was 3.1°C below the normal average for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Other areas in the region also recorded low temperatures, contributing to the overall cold wave:

  • Qazigund: Minimum of minus 4.4°C, 1.3°C below normal.
  • Pahalgam: Minimum of minus 6.3°C, 0.7°C above normal.
  • Kokernag: Minimum of minus 2.4°C, 1.6°C above normal.
  • Kupwara: Minimum of minus 4.7°C, 2.0°C below normal.
  • Gulmarg: Minimum of minus 5.0°C, 2.6°C above normal.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 4.8°C, below normal by 2.6°C. Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.4°C, Batote 2.2°C, and Bhaderwah minus 0.2°C.

The famous skiing resort of Gulmarg, known for its winter sports activities, recorded a temperature of minus 5.0°C, providing ideal conditions for winter enthusiasts.

The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing the “Chillai-Kalan,” 40 days of harsh winter that will last until January 30. This will be followed by 20 days called “Chillai-Khurd” from January 30 to February 19 and 10 days known as “Chillai-Bachha” from February 20 to March 1.

The meteorological official mentioned that generally dry weather is expected from January 10 to 16, with no significant weather activity anticipated until January 15. The harsh winter conditions are likely to persist during this period.
