Imphal, April 24: In the wake of an IED blast that partially damaged a bridge on National Highway 2 in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, the region finds itself grappling with yet another episode of violence.

The incident, which occurred on April 23, has not only disrupted traffic but has also reignited concerns over the precarious security situation in the area, already scarred by ethnic tensions.

As news of the blast reverberated throughout Manipur, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) swiftly voiced its apprehension and dismay over the escalating violence.

With a deep-seated commitment to preserving the integrity of Manipur, COCOMI emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Demanding accountability and justice, the Meetei body called for the case to be promptly handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), underscoring the gravity of the situation and its implications for the 3.5 million residents of the state.

The significance of the damaged bridge extends beyond its physical impact on traffic; it serves as a vital artery connecting India and Myanmar, facilitating not only the movement of people but also trade and connectivity throughout Southeast Asia.

COCOMI’s concern is not merely confined to the immediate aftermath of the blast; it also draws attention to the broader context of violence and instability that has plagued the region.

Highlighting the interconnected nature of recent attacks, COCOMI pointed to a similar incident in the Kwakta areas of the CCpur district border region on June 21, 2023.

The involvement of the NIA in investigating that attack, which led to the apprehension of individuals linked to the Kuki community, underscores the need for a rigorous and impartial inquiry into the Kangpokpi blast.

Acknowledging the multifaceted challenges confronting Manipur, COCOMI shed light on the complex dynamics of the region, including issues such as opium cultivation, illegal village expansions, and the influx of undocumented immigrants from Myanmar.

These underlying complexities, intertwined with ethnic tensions, underscore the imperative of addressing the root causes of violence and instability in the region.

In their call for justice, COCOMI condemns the Kangpokpi blast in the strongest terms and urges swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrators to account. The demand for NIA intervention reflects a broader sentiment of distrust in local investigative mechanisms and underscores the need for an independent and impartial inquiry into the incident.

While COCOMI’s condemnation resonates across Manipur, it is not the sole voice speaking out against the violence.

The Kuki Student body from the region has also issued a press release condemning the blast, highlighting the shared commitment to peace and stability among diverse communities in Manipur.

Amidst heightened tensions, tribal bodies have convened emergency meetings, bringing together stakeholders, village elders, and civil organizations to address the aftermath of the blast.

These gatherings underscore the collective resolve of Manipur’s communities to confront the challenges posed by violence and to pursue a path towards peace and reconciliation.

As Manipur navigates the aftermath of yet another violent incident, the call for justice reverberates across the region, underscoring the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the root causes of conflict and to foster dialogue and understanding among its diverse communities.

Manipur stands at a critical juncture in the quest for peace, justice, and unity, where decisive action and collective solidarity are paramount.
