Kohima, May 04: Two fire incidents occurred in the Yimpang area of Kinunger village, situated in the Mokokchung district, approximately 20 kilometers away from Mokokchung Town.

The first fire broke out around 1:30 am, destroying two houses, one granary, and two scooters. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported as the houses were unoccupied at the time of the incident.

Local villagers, along with residents from nearby villages such as Chungtia and Aliba, volunteered to assist. Firefighters from the South Fire station, Marepkong Mokokchung, also joined efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

The second fire occurred around 9:40 am inside a church. Reports indicated the presence of three petrol bottles inside the church, with one used to ignite the fire while the others were pierced to leak and potentially catch fire.

However, prompt action prevented significant damage, and the village councils immediately informed the Police and District administration.

Subsequent investigations revealed additional petrol bottles in two vacant houses within the village. The total damage included properties worth 15 lakhs, two scooters, and a rice granary that was only a year old, as confirmed by the village Chairman.

The village councils expressed suspicion that the incidents were deliberate acts aimed at causing harm and destruction.

The Police initiated a preliminary investigation following the lodging of the first investigation report, but the culprit remains unidentified as investigations are ongoing.

These incidents occurred shortly after the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) issued a statement questioning the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) proposal to conduct a cleanliness drive in church compounds across the state on May 11.

CAN expressed doubts regarding the BJP’s intentions behind organizing such an event.
