NHRC Takes Up 40 Cases On Violation Of Human Rights In Northeast

Guwahati, Dec 18: During a two-day public hearing in Guwahati, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took up 40 cases of human rights abuses in the Northeast.

in Northeast states of Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur were among the five northeastern states that the NHRC heard complaints about human rights violations during the two-day hearing on Thursday and Friday.

Assam accounts for 23 cases, Manipur for 13, Arunachal Pradesh for 1, and Nagaland for 3. According to the statement, the commission further stated that five cases had been closed in which states had compiled compensation recommendations.

There were nine cases heard by the Commission on December 17 that are now awaiting full consideration. For the death of a NOK in police custody in Tinsukia district, Assam, the Commission has recommended an amount of Rs.3,00,000/- to be paid as compensation.

According to the report, the commission also recommended that an amount of Rs.3,00,000/- be allocated in case of encounter deaths in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district. Besides this, it has also recommended Rs.5,00,000/- as compensation for death in police custody in the district of Imphal (East) in Manipur.

According to the report, if the deceased died in custody in the Mon district of Nagaland, a sum of Rs. 4.5 lakh was to be paid to the nominated beneficiary of the deceased.

Upon being contacted by the Commission on the case of an employee in Guwahati, who acquired a disability while at work and whose employment was terminated by his employer; the Commission ordered the employer to make alternative arrangements for his reinstatement to the service, as per the Disability Act.

Meanwhile, the Chirang district authorities in Assam have requested Rs.5,00,000/- from the State authorities in regards to the rape of a tribal woman by a GRP member of Chachar district.

According to State authorities, both of the delinquent police officers have been discharged. The Commission has requested state authorities to submit Action Taken Reports in all other cases, including compliance cases, so that the cases can be further investigated.
