2. Securing 62.9% of the vote, Haley surpassed former President Donald Trump in this symbolic win.
3. As the only remaining challenger to Trump, Haley’s victory underscores her resilience in the Republican race.

Washington DC, March 04: Nikki Haley secured her first primary victory by winning the Washington DC Republican primary, defeating former President Donald Trump with 62.9% of the vote, according to Edison Research.

This win, although symbolic, marks a significant moment for Haley, who remains the sole challenger to Trump in the Republican race.

Despite this victory, she faces formidable odds in securing the party’s nomination to challenge President Joe Biden in November, with Trump dominating previous contests and maintaining strong support in future ones, as indicated by opinion polls.

Washington DC, known for its urban demographics and a high proportion of college-educated residents, presents a unique battleground. Trump’s base typically leans towards rural areas with lower educational attainment, contrasting with the profile of DC voters.

The city’s significant federal workforce, often targeted by Trump’s rhetoric, adds another layer of complexity. Haley’s victory in DC, where Trump is unpopular, may shield her from criticism of her inability to win a nominating contest.

However, some Republicans may view her popularity in the capital unfavorably, given the prevailing narrative of DC being crime-ridden and elitist.

Despite this win, Haley’s delegate count remains modest, with 19 delegates secured, a fraction of the total needed to secure the nomination.

Super Tuesday, with its 15 state contests and one US territory, will offer a more substantial opportunity, with 874 Republican delegates at stake.

This victory in the DC primary echoes past rejections of Trump by the city’s Republicans. In 2016, Trump received minimal support in the DC contest, underscoring the divide between the city’s voters and the broader Republican base.

Looking ahead, Haley’s win sets the stage for a fiercely contested primary season, with the Democratic primary in Washington slated for June.
