Chidambaram Manipur

Guwahati, July 03: Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram took a dig at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, urging him to refrain from interfering in the affairs of Manipur. Chidambaram suggested that it would be beneficial if Sarma didn’t “poke his nose” into the ongoing conflict and instead stayed away from it.

Sarma had recently expressed optimism, stating that the situation in Manipur would improve within seven to 10 days. However, Chidambaram countered this by recommending Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation and the implementation of President’s Rule in the state for a few months.

Sarma, who serves as the convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), made these remarks during a press interaction in Dibrugarh on Saturday. He emphasized that the situation in Manipur was steadily progressing and predicted further improvements within the coming week or so. Additionally, he claimed that significant strides had already been made in the state over the past month.

In response to Sarma’s statements, Chidambaram took to Twitter, stating, “The Chief Minister of Assam has promised that peace will be restored in Manipur within a week. It would be more helpful if he refrained from interfering in Manipur’s conflict and maintained his distance.”

Chidambaram further suggested that Singh’s resignation and the implementation of the President’s Rule could contribute positively to the situation.

The ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur have resulted in the loss of over 100 lives since the outbreak of violence on May 3. While the state and central governments have been working quietly to restore peace, Sarma’s remarks and Chidambaram’s criticism have added another dimension to the evolving situation.

The conflict in Manipur remains a matter of concern, and it is essential for all parties involved to approach the issue with sensitivity and a commitment to finding a peaceful resolution.
