Modi Manipur

New Delhi, July 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the recent incidents of sexual atrocities in Manipur, expressing his deep sorrow and anger at what has happened to the daughters of the state.

He asserted that such heinous acts can never be forgiven, and the guilty individuals responsible for these despicable acts will not be spared. Addressing the issue with utmost gravity, PM Modi urged all state chiefs to take immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of women across the country.

In a press statement before the commencement of the Monsoon session of Parliament, PM Modi stated, “This is a shameful incident for any society…whoever did this and whoever is responsible, it is a matter of shame for our entire nation. I appeal to all chief ministers to strengthen law and order in their respective states. Whether it is Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, or Manipur, the issue of a woman’s honor is above all politics.”

The incident that has sparked nationwide outrage came to light after a 76-day-old video resurfaced on social media. The video depicted the horrifying scene of two women being forcibly disrobed and paraded on village roads, an act linked to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.

In response to this appalling act, the main suspect, Heradas (32), was arrested in Thoubal district on Thursday. The police apprehended him with the help of a viral video showing him wearing a green shirt during the incident.

Manipur’s Chief Minister Biren Singh assured that a thorough investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken against the accused. He even hinted at the possibility of capital punishment for the guilty, reflecting the seriousness with which the state government is treating the matter.

As the issue continues to draw widespread condemnation and demands for justice, opposition parties are insisting on discussing it in Parliament. They have submitted notices in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, seeking discussions on the situation, with a strong preference for the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during these discussions.

The violence in Manipur erupted on May 3 following protests by the Kuki and Naga communities against a High Court order. The court had asked the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. Only STs have the privilege of purchasing land in hilly areas.

The Meitei community, residing in the Imphal Valley and nearby regions, sought ST status due to their increasing population and land requirements in hilly areas. This issue ignited tensions between different communities, leading to violent clashes and the subsequent tragic incident of sexual violence that shocked the nation.

The situation in Manipur demands a prompt and decisive response from the government and the legal system to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent any recurrence of such atrocities. The nation stands united in its demand for a safe and secure environment for women and in its pursuit of a society that upholds the dignity and rights of every individual, regardless of gender or community background. We can only build a society that is truly free from violence and injustice through collective efforts and unwavering commitment.
