Aizawl, Oct 01: Four-month-old Mizo National Front (MNF) government in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) is on the verge of a major shift, with Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma announcing his intention to join the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).

Rasik Mohan Chakma, a veteran MNF leader and the current leader of the MNF legislature party in the CADC, expressed his disappointment at being denied a ticket by the MNF high command in Aizawl for the upcoming election to the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly.

The MNF leadership has decided to field Durjya Dhan Chakma, one of its members, from the Tuichawng assembly constituency, the same constituency that RM Chakma had won in the previous election.

RM Chakma stated that he and 17 other members of the district council (MDCs) will soon join the ZPM en masse, effectively converting the CADC government into a ZPM-led one.

Sources within the ZPM have indicated that K. Sapdanga, the Working President of the party, will travel to Chawngte, the headquarters of the CADC, to participate in the ceremony marking RM Chakma and other MDCs joining the ZPM on Wednesday.

During the election for the 20-member CADC in May, the MNF, led by RM Chakma, secured victories in 10 constituencies. Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress each won 5 seats, and the ZPM, participating in the CADC polls for the first time, did not secure any seats.

RM Chakma, with the backing of 8 MDCs from the BJP and Congress (4 from each party), managed to form the government in the CADC. He was sworn in as the CEM on May 25, leading the MNF administration in the council. However, his decision to switch allegiance to the ZPM signifies a significant political shift in the region.
