Delhi, Oct 02: Meghalaya takes center stage as a protest for the recognition of the Khasi language and its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution rocks New Delhi. The peaceful sit-in protest witnessed a diverse gathering of individuals, including prominent politicians and leaders, all united in their quest to elevate the Khasi language to national recognition.

Key figures such as Cabinet Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Adviser of the Chief Minister, Hamletson Dohling, joined forces to support the cause. The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) also stood in solidarity.

This demonstration took on even greater significance as leaders from various pressure groups, including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), and the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), came together to amplify their demand for the inclusion of the Khasi Language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Furthermore, members of the Khasi Author’s Society, dedicated to preserving and promoting Khasi literature, added their voices to this historic call for recognition. Notably, this protest marked the first instance of such a demonstration taking place in the national capital to advocate for the inclusion of the Khasi Language in the Eighth Schedule.
