Patna, Dec 13: In a disturbing incident in Bihar’s Vaishali district, a 24-year-old woman was apprehended for carrying out an acid attack on a man who had refused to marry her.

The victim sustained severe facial burn injuries as a result of the corrosive assault, driven by the woman’s frustration over his rejection of her marriage proposal. The police, who disclosed the details of the incident on a Tuesday, are actively pursuing another unidentified accomplice involved in the attack.

Vaishali SP Ravi Ranjan Kumar provided insights into the incident, stating, “As per the statement of the victim, he received a call around 2 am from the woman, who wished to meet him. During the woman’s interrogation, she admitted that the victim, named Dharmendra, had rejected her marriage proposal. Subsequently, his family arranged his marriage to another woman, which triggered her decision to disfigure his face.

This incident is unfortunately not isolated, as acid attacks continue to be a grave concern in India. In a separate case, two brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment for an acid attack on a girl that occurred three years prior.

The court imposed a significant fine of Rs. 3,20,000 to be paid to the survivor’s family. Another distressing incident involved a 17-year-old girl who suffered severe injuries in an acid attack by her neighbor.

The attack was in retaliation for the neighbor’s failed attempt to molest her, an act that also involved holding her mother at gunpoint.

These distressing events highlight the gravity of acid attacks in India, where assailants frequently target victims’ faces, causing not only physical harm but also inflicting enduring psychological trauma and societal stigma.

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 326A prescribes a minimum of 10 years of imprisonment, extendable to life, along with a fine for such offenses. The imposed fine is intended to cover the victim’s medical expenses, recognizing the enduring impact of these heinous crimes.
