Guwahati, Sep 21: After seven years of imprisonment, six former cadres of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) were released from Bhutan’s Gelephu prison and handed over to Indian authorities.

The Bhutanese authorities facilitated the transfer of the six men, who had been held in Gelephu since their arrest by the Royal Bhutan Army in 2016.

The released individuals, identified as Jivan Basumatary, Sonaram Mochahary, Sonam Magar, Bimal Basumatary, Dilip Basumatary, and Fakhon Narzary, were detained as part of a crackdown on insurgent activities within Bhutanese territory.

Their release marks a significant development in the ongoing peace process within the region.

A high-level reception was organized at the Gelephu entry gate, on the India-Bhutan border, to welcome the former cadres.

The delegation, led by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro and Member of Parliament Jaoynta Basumatary, greeted them warmly.

Their return is seen as a positive step toward the rehabilitation and reintegration of former NDFB members, furthering the peace-building efforts in the region.

This event underscores the strengthening bilateral relations between India and Bhutan, highlighting joint efforts to maintain stability and foster peace in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
