Illegal sugar trade came to light after an accident involving two trucks weighing more than 30 metric tonnes (MT) on a bridge on NH-62 near Karongre in South Garo Hills. The area where the bridge is located is in the West Garo Hills area of ​​Dalu Police Station.

Since Bangladesh is not a famous sugar producer, prices are quite high in the country. While a kilo of sugar costs only around Rs 40-45 in India, the price of a kilo of sugar in neighbouring Bangladesh is more than Rs 110.
