Guwahati, Feb 24: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), under the leadership of Badruddin Ajmal, has thrown its support behind the INDIA Alliance, aiming to present a significant challenge to the BJP-NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Ajmal emphasized that the INDIA Alliance substantially threatens the ruling BJP-NDA coalition, expressing confidence that his party would secure three seats in the Lok Sabha elections and back the INDIA Alliance.

In response to the government’s decision to repeal the Muslim Marriage Act, Ajmal criticized the move, predicting dire consequences for the BJP in Assam.

He accused the BJP of attempting to polarize voters by targeting Muslims and asserted that such actions would lead to the downfall of the BJP in the state.

The decision to repeal the Muslim Marriage Registration and Divorce Act of 1935 has faced strong opposition from various quarters, including the AIUDF and the Assam Congress.

Abdur Rashid Mandal, a Congress MLA, condemned the move, labeling the BJP government as “anti-Muslim” and accusing it of pandering to Hindu sentiments at the expense of the Muslim community.

Mandal’s critique highlights broader concerns about the repeal’s impact on the Muslim population in Assam.

He argued that the decision was discriminatory and accused the government of failing to address issues such as implementing a Uniform Civil Code and banning polygamy.

Mandal suggested that the timing of the repeal, just before the elections, was a deliberate attempt to sway Hindu voters in favor of the BJP while marginalizing Muslims.

He emphasized the significance of the Muslim Marriage Act, noting that it is the sole mechanism for registering Muslim marriages and is following the Indian Constitution. Mandal pledged to address the issue within his party and advocate for the rights of the Muslim community.

The AIUDF’s alignment with the INDIA Alliance underscores Assam’s growing political dynamics and the implications for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

As political parties maneuver to secure electoral advantages, the fate of minority communities, particularly Muslims, remains a contentious issue, shaping the political discourse in the region.
