Kolkata, Feb 24: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) probe team revealed shocking details regarding Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates’ alleged misconduct in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal.

Complainants reported that Shahjahan and his group subjected tribals to torture and forcefully seized wages under the MNREGA scheme. The victims accused the West Bengal Police of shielding Shahjahan and his cohorts.

Vice-Chairperson Ananta Nayak stated that over 50 complaints highlighted instances of sexual harassment against tribal women and land encroachments by Shahjahan’s associates. Many victims, primarily Hindus, claimed that those who voted against Shahjahan’s party faced harassment.

MNREGA Extortion Scheme

The probe revealed Shahjahan’s exploitation of poor tribal individuals, coercing them to surrender their MNREGA earnings. Nayak emphasized that such extortion practices were unprecedented.

Residents of Sandeshkhali, particularly women, staged protests demanding Shahjahan’s arrest, accusing him of land usurpation and transforming their properties into fish farms.

Fresh protests erupted in Sandeshkhali, with locals intensifying demands for Shahjahan’s apprehension. The situation turned volatile, with incidents of arson and assault targeting individuals linked to Shahjahan.

Persistent Lawlessness

Despite police intervention, tensions continued to escalate, underscoring the deep-seated anger among residents against Shahjahan and his associates. Several arrests were made in connection with the alleged crimes, including sexual assault and incitement of violence.

The NCST team highlighted police indifference towards victims, alleging that authorities neglected to register complaints against Shahjahan and resorted to advising victims to negotiate with him instead.

The unfolding saga in Sandeshkhali underscores the challenges of political exploitation and systemic failures in addressing grievances. The ordeal faced by tribal communities highlights the urgent need for justice and accountability in safeguarding their rights and dignity.
