Kolkata, May 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cyclone ‘Remal’ alert for Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, as heavy rainfall lashed parts of Kolkata on Thursday morning.

A low-pressure area formed over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on May 22, according to the latest bulletin from the Met Office.

The cyclonic storm is expected to move northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24, intensifying further and reaching northeast and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by May 25 evening.

The IMD forecasted moderate showers in North and South 24-Parganas along with East Midnapore on Saturday, coinciding with the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections.

In West Bengal and Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is expected in many places, with heavy rainfall likely in isolated areas of North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Balasore districts on May 25 and May 26.

Additionally, rough to very rough sea conditions are predicted over the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23 and over the North Bay of Bengal from May 24 until May 26.

Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is anticipated over the central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal from May 23, extending to nearby areas of the North Bay of Bengal with increased wind speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on May 24 morning.

The Met department advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23 and into the North Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards until May 26.
