Guwahati, Feb 08: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s criticism of the Centre’s decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) by recalling historical precedents.
Taking to X, Sarma highlighted that the Nehru government, post-independence, had initiated the FMR, allowing a 40 km visa-free entry along the Indo-Myanmar border. However, this distance was later reduced to 16 km in 2004, leading to its eventual suspension in 2024.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury criticized the government’s move, urging a resolution to conflicts between the Kuki and Meitei communities before scrapping the FMR.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the discontinuation of the FMR between India and Myanmar, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to strengthening border security and preserving demographic integrity.
Shah stressed the importance of internal security and maintaining demographic balance along the border regions adjoining Myanmar. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR to address concerns related to security threats and demographic shifts.
