Guwahati, Jan 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has vehemently denied allegations of sending a police spy to the ULFA (I) camp in Myanmar.

Sarma clarified that Manash Borgohain, accused of spying, is not part of Assam Police and urged ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah not to punish an innocent person.

He highlighted that Borgohain’s claim of studying at an institute called ‘Jest’ was verified, revealing he is a diploma engineer and has not taken the required exam to become a Sub Inspector (SI).

The Assam Police issued an official statement rejecting any involvement in sending a spy to the ULFA-I camp. They asserted that Manash Borgohain was not recruited in the Special Branch of the police in 2021, as claimed by ULFA-I.

This clarification follows the release of a confessional video by ULFA-I on January 28, where Borgohain, also known as Mukut Axom, was announced to have breached the outfit’s Constitution.

In the confessional video, Mukut Axom confessed to being tasked by Assam state authorities to spy on ULFA-I, detailing his association with the Special Branch of Assam Police since 2021.

The video triggered a strong denial from Chief Minister Sarma and the Assam Police, emphasizing the absence of any official involvement in such activities and urging ULFA (I) to reconsider their stance on Borgohain’s case.
