Guwahati, May 24: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited the flood-hit Dima Hasao district to take a stock of the situation firsthand.

Sarma while visiting the relief camps and interacting with the inmates there, also held a discussion with the Dima Hasao district administration and reviewed the preliminary destruction caused due to landslides.

He stressed on immediate resumption of full-scale transportation and laid emphasis on the restoration of damaged roads.

He assured that both the Central and the state governments will help North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) with adequate funds to tide over the present crisis.

“In view of the first wave of flood and destruction it caused to the hill district, we visited Haflong, district HQ of Dima Hasao, and inspected landslide areas, including a road at Sarkari Bagan area which got badly damaged by floods. Restoration work will start soon. We are working to mitigate the risk due to landslides,” he said.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the glimpse on Twitter and said that “Visited temporary relief camps in Lower Haflong High school & LP school along with officials & leaders and interacted with inmates. Reviewed medical & other facilities. Asked DC to look after their needs & help them repair their houses. There is a total of 149 inmates.”

CM also met the family members of three persons who lost their lives to floods in Haflong.

Chief Minister also took reviewed the preliminary destruction caused by landslides at Haflong and other parts of the district. He stressed on immediate resumption of full-scale transportation in the district and laid emphasis on the restoration of roads damaged by landslides.

The Chief Minister said that the government both at the Centre and State will help North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council with adequate funds to tide over the present crisis. He further informed that the government is working on finding a permanent solution so that heavy rainfall-induced landslides can be averted. He also informed that a Central Team will visit Dima Hasao on May 27 to assess the extent of loss caused by a rain-induced landslide in the district.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force has also airdropped most essential supplies like rice, pulses, mustard oil, potato, onion, etc. through 20 shuttles of helicopters from Guwahati, Jorhat, and Silchar.

NHAI officials from Dima-Hasao informed us that the road connectivity from Jatinga to Retzawl village was temporarily restored.

Further, about 8,000 litres of Diesel were also airdropped to these locations with the help of IAF. So far 50.6 MT of such items has been provided to far-flung areas like Harangajao, Khepre, Laisong, Hajadisa along with Haflong with the help of helicopters sorties of the Indian Air Force.
