Guwahati, Nov 01: The Assam government has announced the reservation of five seats in the medical and dental colleges of the state for Bhutanese students. This decision was made as a goodwill gesture in anticipation of the upcoming state visit of the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, to Assam on November 3 and 4.

During a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the decision to allocate seats for Bhutanese students was finalized. Of these five reserved seats, three will be allocated for MBBS courses, and two for BDS programs.

Cabinet minister Jayanta Malla Barua made the announcement, emphasizing the significance of the Bhutanese king’s visit to Assam in strengthening the ties between the two regions. He noted that the visit is expected to benefit various sectors, including tourism and trade, and the government has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure its smooth execution.

In addition to this decision, the government also disclosed the dates for the Anandaram Barooah Award and the Banikanta Kakati Award, which recognize meritorious students.

On November 29, the Anandaram Barooah Award will be presented to students who have achieved over 75% in their Matric exams. The award aims to support these students in purchasing computers, and a total of 27,183 students will receive Rs 15,000 each through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for this purpose.

On November 30 and December 1, the Banikanta Kakati Award will be given to female students who have scored more than 60% in the Higher Secondary exams and to male students who have achieved over 75% in the same exams. Over 35,000 students will be presented with scooters as part of this award.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to promoting education and fostering strong international relations in the region.
