Dhaka, March 23: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has reached out to India, seeking assistance in importing electricity from Bhutan via Indian territory.

This request was formally conveyed during her meeting with Pranay Verma, the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, held at the Prime Minister’s official residence.

The anticipated agreement for electricity import is projected to be finalized during the imminent visit of Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyal to Dhaka on March 25.

Alongside this, Sheikh Hasina urged for the removal of India’s anti-dumping measures concerning the import of jute and jute goods from Bangladesh.

Furthermore, she proposed that India could undertake the modernization of the Syedpur Railway Workshop.

During the discussions, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of Bangladesh’s continuous democratic system and its pivotal role in the nation’s development trajectory.

In response, Pranay Verma outlined various projects in Bangladesh that have received funding under the Indian Line of Credit.

He also highlighted bilateral initiatives such as Rupee-Taka trade transactions and the production of the Bangabandhu Biopic.

Additionally, Verma shed light on the ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership and explored the potential for Bangladesh to collaborate with India in establishing a defense factory through a joint venture.

As a gesture of bilateral engagement, the Indian High Commissioner extended an invitation from the Indian Prime Minister for Sheikh Hasina to visit India post the Indian National Election, indicating the commitment to fostering stronger ties between the two nations.
