Bhopal, Dec 03: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured victory in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections by winning 122 out of the total 230 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 116, according to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI). The saffron party is also leading on 42 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress has won 36 seats and is leading on 29.

The BJP’s resounding success in Madhya Pradesh is evident, with the party leading in over 160 seats, securing a substantial lead over the Congress, as per the latest trends. The counting of votes commenced earlier in the day, following the single-phase assembly elections held on November 17 for all 230 seats in the state. The outcomes will determine the fate of more than 2,500 candidates.

This year’s voter turnout in Madhya Pradesh stood at 77.15%, marking a 1.52% increase from the 2018 elections. As the BJP aimed to retain its dominance in the Hindi heartland, the Congress sought to avenge its loss of government due to defections that facilitated the BJP’s return to power in 2020.

In the 2018 elections, the Congress secured 114 seats out of 230 but fell short of an outright majority. It formed a government with the support of the BSP, SP, and independent MLAs, with Kamal Nath taking oath as the chief minister in December 2018.

In the 2013 elections, the BJP won 165 seats with a 44.87% vote share, while the Congress secured a 36.37% vote share with 58 seats. Other political parties won 7 seats with an 18.76% vote share.
