Kolkata, March 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strategically played the card of Bengal’s royal heritage by nominating ‘rajmata’ (Queen Mother) Amrita Roy to contest against Trinamool Congress’s Mahua Moitra in Bengal’s Krishnanagar constituency, setting the stage for a compelling electoral battle ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

This move was unveiled with the release of the BJP’s fifth list of candidates, which includes 111 names, including Amrita Roy, who recently joined the party.

Amrita Roy, the rajmata of Krishnanagar’s ‘rajbari’ (royal palace), brings with her a deep connection to Bengal’s rich cultural and historical legacy.

Her candidacy evokes the memory of Maharaja Krishna Chandra Roy, a revered figure in Bengal’s history known for his progressive rule during the 18th century.

Maharaja Krishna Chandra’s enlightened governance and patronage of arts and culture left an indelible mark on the region, earning him widespread admiration and respect.

Belonging to the illustrious Nadia royal family, Maharaja Krishna Chandra’s legacy continues to resonate through the corridors of Krishnanagar’s royal palace, an architectural marvel that stands as a testament to Bengal’s opulent heritage.

The palace, once the seat of the Maharajas of Nadia, remains a cherished landmark, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and sophistication of bygone eras.

The decision to field Amrita Roy as a candidate is expected to bolster the BJP’s prospects in Krishnanagar and pose a formidable challenge to Mahua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress.

Political analysts anticipate that Amrita Roy’s candidacy will not only resonate with voters but also inject fresh momentum into the BJP’s campaign in the region.

The BJP’s nomination of Amrita Roy was preceded by discussions and consultations with the Nadia district leadership, reflecting a strategic approach to candidate selection.

With the BJP consolidating its organizational strength in the Kaliganj Assembly over the past five years and Trinamool Congress grappling with internal challenges, including corruption allegations and infighting, the electoral landscape in Krishnanagar appears poised for a significant shift.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mahua Moitra secured a resounding victory in Krishnanagar, propelled by overwhelming support from key assemblies such as Chopra, Palashipara, and Kaliganj.

However, the BJP’s nomination of Amrita Roy, a local and influential figure, is poised to galvanize support and widen the vote gap in the upcoming elections.

As the political landscape evolves in Bengal, the clash between Bengal’s royal heritage and contemporary politics underscores the complexities and dynamics shaping the state’s electoral narrative.

With Amrita Roy’s candidacy, the BJP aims to tap into the sentiments of tradition and legacy while charting a course for transformative change in Krishnanagar and beyond.
