Assam floods

Guwahati, July 17: The flood situation in Assam remains severe, with more than 1 lakh individuals affected across 10 districts, as per the official bulletin.

The release of water from neighboring country Bhutan has aggravated the flood-like conditions, causing significant damage in the state.

The daily flood report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reveals that Sonitpur, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sivasagar, and Udalguri districts have been severely impacted, with over 98,800 people affected.

After water release from Bhutan’s Kurichhu dam, Assam went on high alert. However, the flood situation worsened, and rescue efforts are currently underway. Among the worst-hit areas, Golaghat has witnessed nearly 29,000 affected individuals, followed by Dhemaji with 28,000 and Sivasagar with 13,500, according to the report. As of Saturday, the number of affected people stood at around 1.08 lakh across 12 districts.

To provide aid and relief, the administration has established 17 relief camps in two districts, offering shelter to 2,941 people. Additionally, 49 relief distribution centers are operational in six districts.

The floodwaters have submerged 371 villages, and approximately 3,618.35 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, as reported by the ASDMA. Furthermore, significant erosion has been observed in Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Udalguri, and Tinsukia.

The floods have caused extensive damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Morigaon, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Majuli districts.

The major rivers of Assam, which are considered lifelines, have turned into destructive forces. Water levels in the Brahmaputra River have risen above the danger mark in Dhubri, Tezpur, and Neamatighat. Additionally, its tributary, Dikhou, is flowing at a high level in Sivasagar.
