Guwahati, July 17: The state of Assam has undergone a nomenclature change from “Deputy Commissioner” to “District Commissioner.” This transformation was recently announced through a notification issued by the General Administrative Department of the Government of Assam.

The notification highlights that this change has been introduced for administrative expediency and to serve the best interests of the public. With the approval of the Governor of Assam, the decision to re-designate the post of Deputy Commissioner as District Commissioner comes into effect immediately.

The primary objective of this decision is to streamline administrative functions and improve public service delivery at the district level. By adopting the new nomenclature, it is anticipated that governance and management of district affairs will become more efficient and effective.

Henceforth, the term “District Commissioner” will replace the previous designation of “Deputy Commissioner” across all official communications and documents. This change will be implemented uniformly throughout the state.

It is worth noting that the decision to rename the post of Deputy Commissioner as District Commissioner was initially taken by the Assam Cabinet on May 19. This move signifies the government’s commitment to modernize and adapt to the evolving needs of governance in the state.
