Imphal, Jan 29: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh laid the foundation stone for the Imphal Ring Road Project, valued at Rs 1766 crore, at Takyel Khongbal Maning Leikai under the Patsoi constituency.

The state government aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Imphal areas with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Addressing the event, Chief Minister N Biren Singh highlighted the increasing issue of traffic congestion due to population growth and identified it as a top priority for the state government.

The Imphal Ring Road Project, scheduled for completion by 2026, aims to address this challenge. Singh commended the ADB for supporting this significant project that will benefit the state’s residents.

The Chief Minister also discussed other projects, including the Lamphelpat Water Body Rejuvenation Project, costing around Rs. 650 crores.

This initiative covers 300 acres of water body area and approximately 140 acres for a recreation center. Plans to connect the recreation center and the Imphal View Tower at Cheirao Ching through a cable car were also revealed.

Singh expressed satisfaction with the return of migratory birds following the rejuvenation of the Lamphel Water Body.

He emphasized the government’s efforts to clean the Nambul River, transport household waste through pipelines to the Sewerage treatment plant, and address environmental concerns such as mass deforestation and potential water scarcity.

The Chief Minister announced plans to develop the ground at Takyel Khongbal Maning Leikai under “Khungang Ama Sanabung Ama” and shared details about the development of Oriental College at Patsoi Assembly Constituency, with a project costing Rs. 6.40 crores.

In addition, road development work is estimated at Rs. 7.2 crore will be undertaken in Patsoi AC.

Singh acknowledged the challenging situation in Manipur and pledged to protect the state’s unity from vested interest groups, calling for unity among the people.

Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam, in his keynote address for the Imphal Ring Road Project, revealed that the project was initially planned for 2015-16 but was approved in 2020.

The project spans 51.23 km and incorporates a noise pollution control mechanism, a first in India, emphasizing environmental friendliness.

The road includes sections with 4 lanes and 2 lanes, with an 18 km stretch featuring solar lamp footpaths and cycle lanes.

Various amenities like food plazas will be set up along the 4-lane stretch, and provisions for cycle lanes and jogging lanes will be included.

ADB will sanction Rs. 1374.75 crores for road and bridge construction, with the remaining amount shared by the State and Central Governments for land acquisition and other expenses.

Ninety per cent of the ADB loan will be a grant, with the remaining 10 percent and interest to be repaid.
