Bhopal, Sept 13: The opposition alliance known as INDIA is gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections – INDIA recently announced its plans to host its first public meeting in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in the first week of October. This announcement follows the inaugural meeting of the Coordination Committee of the INDIA bloc, which took place in Delhi. The primary focus of the upcoming public meeting will be to address critical issues such as rising prices, unemployment, and allegations of corruption against the BJP-led government.

Opposition’s Coordinated Efforts

The Coordination Committee, consisting of 14 members from various opposition parties, gathered at the residence of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar to discuss a multitude of crucial issues, including seat-sharing for the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. One of the central objectives of this committee is to facilitate discussions among member parties regarding the allocation of seats based on past electoral performance and the relative strength of the largest party in each state. The ultimate goal is to ensure that a united opposition fronts a joint candidate against BJP candidates in Lok Sabha constituencies.

Addressing Socio-Political Concerns

In addition to seat-sharing deliberations, the opposition alliance also expressed its commitment to addressing the longstanding demand for a caste census in Bihar. This issue holds significance in the state’s political landscape, as it is home to diverse caste groups with varying political affiliations. By pledging to tackle this issue, INDIA demonstrates its intention to engage with critical socio-political concerns that have far-reaching implications.

INDIA, comprising 26 opposition parties, emerged as a response to the formidable BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This alliance aims to present a united front against the NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing the importance of collective strength and cohesive strategies in challenging the incumbent government. The Coordination Committee serves as the apex decision-making body of this formidable opposition alliance.

The coordination cum election strategy committee of the INDIA bloc boasts a diverse membership, reflecting the amalgamation of various regional and national parties. Some of the prominent members include KC Venugopal (Congress), TR Baalu (DMK), Hemant Soren (JMM), Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena-UBT), Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Raghav Chadha (AAP), Javed Ali Khan (SP), Lalan Singh (JD-U), D Raja (CPI), Omar Abdullah (National Conference), Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), and a member from CPI-M.

Notable Absence

One notable absence from the Coordination Committee’s meeting was Abhishek Banerjee, a key member representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Banerjee had been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate to appear before it on the same day as the committee’s meeting. His absence was conspicuous, given his significant role in the opposition alliance.
